“I am sitting in a café,the same one you are in now. I am recording the sound of
André Hazes ‘The last Round’ playing in the room and I am going to play it back into the room
again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves
so that any semblance of the song, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is
destroyed. What you will hear, then, are the natural resonant frequencies of the
decaying room articulated by André Hazes. I regard this activity not so much as
a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to show the decay of the
space, the memory of the café, with sound”.

‘T Jonge Tijgerpaard is a ruin of a cafe, stripped bare. Just before renovating, we could use the space for a week to create temporary artworks. The Last Round recreates Alvin Lucier’s* method of recording and playing back that recording into the room, the altered sound shows the resonant frequencies of the room.
In many Dutch café’s ‘T laatste rondje by André Hazes is played before closing time. The desintegration of the song through this method of re-recording shows the decay of the café itself and ends with an uncanny trace of the sound that once played there.
* This audio-piece is an ode and reference to AlvinLucier’s piece I Am Sitting in a Room(1969).
